Political Action Alerts -- Overview

"All Politics is Local"

"Trade Unions arose as a spontaneous and necessary consequence of capitalism, established as economic systems."
— Pope Pius XIII, 1949

As a union of public employees, Local 237 is an integral part of the political process. The union is mindful of its role within the process as it seeks to advance a legislative agenda for members. For public employees, every politics is local!

Local 237 maintains a strong working relationship with government, and encourages its members to take an active role in their communities and in choosing their political leadership. The union exerts considerable influence at the local, state and federal levels by virtue of President Floyd’s role and position as vice president of the New York State AFL-CIO and the New York City Labor Council. Mr. Floyd serves as trustee to the Board of New York City Employee Retirement System (NYCERS), one of the largest public pension funds in the United States with assets of $37 billion. He is also a commissioner on the board of the IBT Human Rights Commission, a post to which he was appointed by IBT General President James P. Hoffa. Floyd also serves on the boards of Group Health Insurance (GHI) and Health Insurance Plan of New York (HIP).

Also, the union's Legislative and Political Action Department regularly spearheads drives for specific legislation on behalf of members and coordinates union participation in electoral campaigns.
